Feeding Many started with a vision that God wanted to plant gardens and grow orchards to help feed families in need. Founder, Shirl Smith wondered how He (God), was going to accomplish such a task, but to her surprise, things started to fall into place in 2008, and by 2009, she had 63 gardens planted in Littleton, CO!
Not only did He provided the landscape block, dirt and people to help build, but to her amazement, people planted gardens for their families and most reaped a beautiful harvest. Some followed the suggestion to share their surplus with people in need and give back to their community.
After the gardens were up and growing, she found other churches, community centers, and schools that were willing to put in gardens and start growing food for families. Then, an orchard was planted in Littleton and in a year or so, it started to bear delicious fruit. This fruit was harvested to eat, but also to make baked goods, deserts and jams.
Soon, bees were added to the orchard to produce honey. The honey can be used as a sweet treat, to sweeten baked goods but also to help individuals with allergies. Local honey contains elements that help them build up resistance and lessen their allergies.
From dreams and visions, God has planned and executed these gardens that will continue to help families and individuals feed themselves and share with others. There is so much that Feeding Many has planned, like education programs on growing food, canning and storing it, and using in everday life; more gardens; more orchards.
