Have you ever picked your own fruits right off the tree? They are warm from the sun and full of rich, sweet juice! That’s a treat that can’t be beat!
I remember going with my family to pick peaches, apricots and nectarines from the local orchards where we lived. It was a special day, and we all dressed in our work clothes, brought bags, ladders and sometimes a clipper to pick our own fruit. We drove to the orchard and then it was time to find our spot to pick. Us kids, eagerly climbed the ladders and picked the very best fruit! It was so much fun – and a fun way to spend the day as a family.
So, Feeding Many plants orchards to help those less fortunate enjoy that same experience if they choose to help. On “Orchard Work Days,” you can volunteer to suit up in work clothes, bring the kids and spread out in the orchard to pick the juicy, sweet fruit for your family and for others. Some may not want to pick their own, so we pick plenty to bring to food pantries or shelters so others can share in the bounty.
Volunteers are always needed for picking as well as a number of other duties like: driving fruit to shelters, baking deserts to donate, making jams, jellies, butters or canning fruit for later use. Our bet is that you have special skills that can help get the delicious fruit harvest into the hands of those who can really use it! Click the link here to sign up to stay informed. We’ll let you know when it’s time to harvest! Make it a special for you and/or your family!
